Why a Strategy mainly fails?
Because it is defined as borad concepts divorced from any specific actions, thus it creates a gap between “Strategy “ and “Implementation”.
To set the stage as defined by Richard Rumelt : “ A strategy is a response to an important challenge or problem. Unlike a stand alone decision or goal, a strategy is a coherent set of analyses, concepts, policies, argument and actions that respond to the high-stake challenge.”
Some leaders / executives complaint about having a sophisticated strategy process but there is a huge problem of execution. This is understandable because they assume that strategy is a big picture overall direction, embodying no specific actions. They confuse strategy with goal setting.
A good strategy includes a set of coherent actions. They are not “implementation” details, they are the punch in the strategy.
Coherent actions are a critical component in a strategy.
Strategy is how an orgnization will move forward. Doing strategy is figuring out how to advance organisation’s interests.
The core of strategy work is always the same : Discovering the critical factors in a situation and designing a way of cordinating and focusing actions to deal with those factors.
